The story of our label began long before 2022. After graduating from a leading design college, a young creative explored the many facets of the industry, deciding, in the years to come, that they wanted to make fashionable yet accessible clothing for a large audience. The market was populated by ubiquitous iterations, but what this person wanted was to dabble in the individuality that celebrated people.
And so, Parhan was slowly conceptualised. In the first month of 2022, we began our journey as a homegrown label based in one sleepy, serene town of Jharkhand. Want to know us a little better? Scroll right ahead to read more about us.
‘Parhan’: The name
Naming a label might sound like a piece of the metaphorical cake, but just like the rest of the things that go into making one, it isn’t. So when we reached the stage of trying to find a name that fit, it was quite the ride. Until we reached here, that is.
The name Parhan (pronounced par-haaan) refers to one-half of the traditional garment of Jharkhand, where we are based. In this attire worn mainly by the women of Santhal Paragana, the lower half is known as Panchi while the other is Parhan. In a small way, it’s our ode to the place we call home.
The people and places that make us
Our idea is centred around making accessible clothing that marries traditional elements with contemporary ones. All of our fabric is sourced from clusters and Indian markets and the garments that reach you are made in our workshop in Ramgarh , Jharkhand,India.
We also work with women in a village near Haridwar, Uttar Pradesh, to create our limited range of hand-knitted products. At the moment, it’s a small yet distinctly talented group which helps us execute this beautiful form.
We are still learning and having a ball as we make things happen. But we have and will continue to believe in the power of people and stories. After all, they are all that matter.
